It is my pleasure to announce the Appointment of Dr. Martha Haun as the National Director of Special Services, where she will be concentrating on Constitution/Bylaws changes and revisions recommendations. Dr. Haun is a Past National President of Phi Beta (6 yrs) and professional Parlimentarian. She is the Director of Graudate Studies at the University of Houston in Houston, TX and the Founder and Director of the Center for Health and Crisis Communication.

Reuniting Old & New Friends - Registration & Opening Reception

National Council Preparing for Convention

National Council arrived in Cincinnati this afternoon to finish getting ready for Convention.

We took a break to join some other members for dinner at a local restaurant. And since it's National Ice Cream Day, we had to stop at Graeter's - a local ice cream joint.

Then it was back to the work of finalizing paper work and agenda items.

This highlight affords both National Council and all fraternity members the opportunity to acknowledge those Phi Betas who have distinguished themselves through exceptional talent and unparalleled service to our fraternity. The awards listed below are open for nomination. Do consider nominating an outstanding member or patron.

LEADERSHIP PIN -- individual award given to a collegiate who has not only exhibited outstanding leadership, but has also demonstrated integrity.

ROSE AWARD -- individual award given to an alumni member who has exhibited outstanding professional development or outstanding lifetime career achievement.

HELENGRACE WARWICK AWARD --individual award given to an alumni member who has been of active, lifelong service to Phi Beta, and who has assisted National Council in some capacity.

Information on Phi Beta Convention 2008 in Williamsburg

Pi Alpha Upsilon is hosting the 2008 Phi Beta Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia on July 17. We are reaching out to all Phi Betas to join the fun! The theme for the convention will be “Phi Beta Meets History” with an appropriate logo of colonial style fife and drum performers. We recommend that you save the information in this article for future reference.

In choosing a hotel for the convention site, the warmth of personnel and overall
attractiveness prompted the decision to contract with the Williamsburg Hospitality House next July 17 – 19. As always, the hotel will let you come before the Convention begins and/or stay after the Convention ends for the special Phi Beta room rate. Check with the hotel for details at (757) 229-4020 and to reserve your room.

There is a highly recommended (but optional) walking tour of Colonial Williamsburg. This is a prime tourist attraction. This tour will take place on Thursday, July 17. It will begin at the Hospitality House (the hotel) at 9:00 am. A lunch will be served at King’s Arm Tavern at 11:30 am. After lunch there will be free time to continue touring until 5:00 pm. The tour package includes a two-day pass to Colonial Williamsburg. The cost of the tour package is $70.00 and needs to be sent to the National Treasurer (Cora) with the convention registration form. (Dress should be casual with comfortable shoes. Those wishing to participate in this tour need to make Wednesday night (July 16th) reservations early, as only rooms for National Council have been arranged for that night. When making your arrangements, ask the hotel for the Phi Beta rate. Check in time is 3pm. The hotel does offer luggage storage if the rooms are not available upon check-in.

The nearest airport is the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in Newport News, VA. Shuttles from the airport to the Hospitality House (the hotel) are available from Tidewater Coach Shuttle Service (757) 218-9539 for the following prices (prices subject to change):

Single: 1-way at $35 and roundtrip at $65
Doubles: 1-way at $40 and roundtrip at $75

Carey VIP Chauffeured Services (757) 220-5466 is also available (3 passenger town car one-way trip cost $87.68). There are also 7 cab companies serving the area (consult a local phone book).

Most of the Williamsburg Area Transport Shuttles service the hotel, providing rides to various places of interest (www.williamsburgtransport.com). Those of age 60 or more ride for half price. Famous places of interest include Jamestown, Yorktown, Busch Gardens Theme Park, the Mariners’ Museum, many outlet stores, and the Williamsburg Pottery. The hotel provides pamphlets for these and many other places of interest in Virginia. A magazine offered by the hotel and motel association, which is available in the lobby, gives all this information plus discount coupons for many local shops and restaurants.

Phi Beta members will provide entertainment at the convention. On Thursday evening, Jamie Auberg will present the premiere of his original movie “Intergalactic Archeology.” Mr. Auberg will also play an original clarinet composition at the banquet. The banquet entertainment will also include Emily Chua, who will provide a generous serving of French piano solos. Marjorie Vance (Program Chairperson) will make a vocal appearance with Emily Chua as well. There will be guest artists comprised of new Phi Beta members, friends, and faculty from Centerstage Academy. The forecast is calling for a strong chance of chamber music!

TOTE-BAGS are available by pre-order only. The bags are 2-tone (royal blue and black) with zippers and pockets, perhaps for your water bottle and cell phone. They include a screen print of the Convention info. The Tote-bags cost $15 each. Orders must be placed by June 15, 2008. (We need 25 for a minimum order!)

Rose Petals Deadline Extended - Resubmissions Requested

Dear Members of Phi Beta Fraternity,

It is with great honor I came to join our organization in 1999, only 9 years ago. In that time, I served as my collegiate chapter President and four years as National VP of Collegiates. Last convention, I accepted the National Editor position, and have been struggling to produce quality materials for all of Phi Beta.

I have endured my share of personal and professional trauma and happenings over the last year and a half, since our 2006 convention where I was sworn into office. Fortunately, I was able to produce the most recent issue of the Rose Petals this past summer, but sadly, due to my moves around Columbus, Ohio, missed out on some of the
non-electronic (postal mail) submissions. Currently, I am in the midst of compiling the next issue of Rose Petals, so that you may all get excited about our upcoming 2008 Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia!

It is with heavy heart I write about yet another setback. While at dinner on Monday, January 14, my car was broken into, and my laptop was stolen. I have reported the incident to all necessary parties, but there is little hope of return. While I still have all articles submitted to me via email, again, I have no hard copies of articles or reports from chapters that submitted materials via US Postal Mail. This includes submissions for Rose Petals and the Baton. This includes both hand written letters and photographs.

Sadly, I must request that any submissions made non-electronically be resubmitted as soon as possible. I hope that this will give other chapters a 'last minute' opportunity to submit even if they have not yet turned in a chapter report or feature article. I also hope that many more of our artistic members nationwide will be interested in
posting a small (and inexpensive!) advertisement for this publication. Or if you are interested in updating your chapter report, please do!

I vow to do my best in the production of this winter's Rose Petals (including convention registration information due in June) as well as our upcoming Baton issue which I hope to print by the start of May. Rose Petals submissions are now due January 31 to editor (at) phibeta (dot) com and Baton features by February 22. Ads for those publications have the same deadlines.

2008 National Convention

Phi Beta's National Convention is being held this year in Williamsburg, Virginia, hosted by our Pi Alpha Upsilon chapter.

This year's Convention dates are July 17-20, 2008.

The Convention hotel is the Williamsburg Hospitality House, located near historic Colonial Williamsburg, Merchant's Square, and the College of William and Mary.

National Council Visits Prospective Convention Site

Phi Beta National Council members held their annual meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia on February 23 - 25, 2007.

Council members provided updates on their individual progress in their positions and outlined goals and tasks to complete during their terms. Read their complete officer reports in your Rose Petals.

In addition, the National Council worked with 2008 Convention hosts Pi Alpha Upsilon as they are already delving into the process of planning a great Convention for all of us in Williamsburg. The Council was delighted to attend the initiation of a new Phi Beta member, Jamie Auberg, and preview a trailer for his upcoming film.

Phi Beta announces the first Esther Kellogg-Schultz Alumni Grants, made possible by a generous gift from Esther Kellog-Schultz.

All alumni members of Phi Beta are eligible to apply for these grants of $250 each. The deadline for applying is April 15, 2007.

October 29, 2006 saw the chartering of Phi Beta Fraternity's newest alumni chapter: Pi Alpha Upsilon. The chapter is located in Virginia, with members currently located in Newport News, Lynchburg, and Richmond.

Phi Beta was pleased to welcome two new alumni members during the 2006 National Convention held in Cleveland, Ohio, in July.

Josh Willett (pictured right) received his bachelor of music education from Capital University. He is a band director in Jackson, Ohio. He and his wife, Cora, recently welcomed two new additions themselves, their twins Ella and Lea.

John Clare (pictured left) is a classical music enthusiast, composer, and award winning radio broadcaster. Phi Beta was privileged to have Clare premier his work The Seven Deadly Cindys during the Convention, as a part of his modern classical music program. Clare is also the webmaster of Classically Hip.
